CSIR demolishes 50 houses at Frafraha, as residents protest

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has begun demolition of structures they say have been illegally built on its land at Frafraha in Accra.

The CSIR has been engaged in a legal battle with about 2000 house owners whom they accuse of encroaching on land belonging to its Animal Research Institute.

Since Tuesday, bulldozers have pulled down about 50 structures, and more are expected to go down.

The residents have been lamenting their losses.

An executive of the residents association, Fred Adjei tells Joy News as far as they are concerned, the struggle over the land is still in court and the CSIR had no right to undertake the demolishing exercise.

The Adenta Police have also arrested three persons in connection with the exercise, who have been granted bail by the Madina Court.

The residents accuse the Adenta Police of siding with the CSIR to perpetuate what they say is an illegal demolition.

“We are therefore calling on the minister of Interior, the IGP and the regional police commander to prevail upon the Adenta Police Commander to respect the laws of Ghana and stop meddling in issues by supporting one faction,” Fred Adjei said.

“We are also calling on the National Security to intervene and ensure no lives are lost unnecessarily to the selfish and parochial interest of few people,” he added.

Meanwhile the police have denied involvement in the demolition exercise.

Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer DSP Freeman Tettey says the police only went to arrest the three persons after a complaint was lodged by officials from the CSIR that some youth in the area had threatened their lives.

Meanwhile, the CSIR has insisted the demolition is legal. CSIR officials say the land is needed to undertake delayed research projects, hence the demolition.
